@X084@X05.@X0831 @X03 FUSE DELAYS
@X08It is extremely simple to delay explosive devices that employ fuses for
ignition@X05.@X08 Perhaps the simplest way to do so is with a cigarette@X05.@X08 An average
cigarette burns for about 8 minutes@X05.@X08 The higher the @X05"@X08tar@X05"@X08 and nicotine rating@X05,@X08
the slower the cigarette burns@X05.@X08 Low @X05"@X08tar@X05"@X08 and nicotine cigarettes burn quicker
than the higher @X05"@X08tar@X05"@X08 and nicotine cigarettes@X05,@X08 but they are also less likely to
go out if left unattended@X05,@X08 i@X05.@X08e@X05.@X08 not smoked@X05.@X08 Depending on the wind or draft in
a given place@X05,@X08 a high @X05"@X08tar@X05"@X08 cigarette is better for delaying the ignition of a
fuse@X05,@X08 but there must be enough wind or draft to give the cigarette enough oxygen
to burn@X05.@X08 People who use cigarettes for the purpose of delaying fuses will often
test the cigarettes that they plan to use in advance to make sure they stay lit@X05,@X08
and to see how long it will burn@X05.@X08 Once a cigarettes burn rate is determined@X05,@X08 it
is a simple matter of carefully putting a hole all the way through a cigarette
with a toothpick at the point desired@X05,@X08 and pushing the fuse for a device in the
hole formed@X05.@X08

A similar type of device can be make from powdered charcoal and a sheet
of paper@X05.@X08 Simply roll the sheet of paper into a thin tube@X05,@X08 and fill it with
powdered charcoal@X05.@X08 Punch a hole in it at the desired location@X05,@X08 and insert a
fuse@X05.@X08 Both ends must be glued closed@X05,@X08 and one end of the delay must be doused
with lighter fluid before it is lit@X05.@X08 Or@X05,@X08 a small charge of gunpowder mixed with
powdered charcoal could conceivably used for igniting such a delay@X05.@X08 A chain of
charcoal briquettes can be used to delay a fuse by merely lining up a few bricks
of charcoal so that they touch each other@X05,@X08 end on end@X05,@X08 and lighting the first
brick@X05.@X08 Incense@X05,@X08 which can be purchased at almost any novelty or party supply
store@X05,@X08 can also be used as a fairly reliable delay@X05.@X08 By wrapping the fuse about
the end of an incense stick@X05,@X08 delays of up to 1@X05/@X082 an hour are possible@X05.@X08
Finally@X05,@X08 it is possible to make a relatively slow@X05-@X08burning fuse in the home@X05.@X08 By
dissolving about one teaspoon of black powder in about 1@X05/@X084 a cup of boiling
water@X05,@X08 and@X05,@X08 while it is still hot@X05,@X08 soaking in it a long piece of all cotton
string@X05,@X08 a slow@X05-@X08burning fuse can be made@X05.@X08 After the soaked string dries@X05,@X08 it
must then be tied to the fuse of an explosive device@X05.@X08 Sometimes@X05,@X08 the end of the
slow burning fuse that meets the normal fuse has a charge of black powder or
gunpowder at the intersection point to insure ignition@X05,@X08 since the slow@X05-@X08burning
fuse does not burn at a very high temperature@X05.@X08 A similar type of slow fuse can
be made by taking the above mixture of boiling water and black powder and pouring
it on a long piece of toilet paper@X05.@X08 The wet toilet paper is then gently twisted
up so that it resembles a firecracker fuse@X05,@X08 and is allowed to dry@X05.@X08
